Its most prominent feature is a manmade 15-acre inland harbour with an extremely advanced lock system, one of the community’s main attractions; it is double the size of Sea Pines Resort’s Harbour Town. Windmill Harbour is the location of the South Carolina Yacht Club as well as both a small marine store.
Full-time security staff the 24-hour gatehouse.
Windmill Harbour Plantation History:
Planned as a 172-acre community on Jenkins Island by Sea Pines Co. and Jenkins Island Realty Corporation, Windmill Harbour is a statement in energy conservation. The community was created in 1981 by J.R. Richardson, a longtime friend of Charles Fraser, and 1983 saw its grand opening with lots as affordable as $50,000. Conservational accessories on homes were to include rooftop turbines for air circulation and water-efficient toilets, among others. Windmill’s sales sold out by 1992.
The clubhouse, designed with Windmill’s Charleston-inspired theme, lies beside Calibogue Sound and hosts fine dining and social events for residents. The sports center here offers yoga classes, multiple clay tennis courts, a 25-meter swimming pool, Jacuzzi, saunas, dressing rooms, and a pro shop; jogging and bike trails form a system of paths throughout the neighborhood. Windmill Harbour is unique among the Hilton Head Plantations because there are no golf courses here.
The yacht club at Windmill Harbour’s 15-acre harbour offers sailing instruction and organized group events for all ages, including races. 260 boat slips, built for boats up to 80 feet long and 20 feet wide, are kept safe with Windmill Harbour’s tide-free lock system. The hydraulic-powered lock holds 130,000 gallons of water at low tide, with two pipelines located on the north side of the lock with check valves monitoring water flow; at high tide, gravity forces the water supply to replenish. This system is one of only three in the East and maintains boat wear and tear at a minimum. 24-hour security, harbormaster services, and a marina shop complete Windmill’s yacht club.
Seven Har-Tru tennis courts are located at Windmill Harbour’s South Carolina Yacht Club sports center complete with a pro shop, saunas, and dressing rooms.
