    About Windmill Harbour Plantation

The first plantation community you pass once on Hilton Head Island, Windmill Harbour’s location is close to schools both off- and on-island as well as to shopping, dining, and entertainment. These 170 acres border the Intracoastal Wateway and the Calibogue Sound, across the highway from the Outdoor Resorts RV Resort and Yacht Club. Its most eye-catching feature is a manmade 15-acre inland harbour with an extremely advanced lock system, which poses as one of the community’s main attractions; it is double the size of Sea Pines Resort’s Harbour Town. Windmill Harbour is the location of the South Carolina Yacht Club as well as both a small marine store.

    Windmill Harbour Plantation: History

Planned as a 172-acre community on Jenkins Island by Sea Pines Co. and Jenkins Island Realty Corporation, Windmill Harbour is a statement in energy conservation. The community was created in 1981 by J.R. Richardson, a longtime friend of Charles Fraser, and 1983 saw its grand opening with lots as affordable as $50,000. Conservational accessories on homes were to include rooftop turbines for air circulation and water-efficient toilets, among others. Windmill’s sales sold out by 1992.
