Real Estate Buyers Tip Pipe down! Galvanized steel plumbing may be found in older homes. After 30 years or so, it tends to rust and leak. Replacements can cost over $5,000 to do the whole house. Look at the pipe outlets near the water heater and at the pipes leading to the outside water spigots. Pipes that are gray in color are galvanized, while copper pipes develop a green tint when oxidized. Polybutylene pipes are still widely used, but polybutylene fittings are no longer sold because they have a high incidence of rupture. Look for copper elbows and T-joints! |
