What to ask your home inspector to look for:
Specifically ask the inspector to look for lead paint and asbestos (typically found in ceilings and as insulation for heating systems). These two materials are toxic, and can be expensive to clean up. The federal government requires the seller to give you a lead disclosure statement, but if the seller doesn't know there's lead or asbestos they aren't require to check for it. If your inspector finds it, insist it be removed before the sale is completed.
