Turn onto Folly Field Road beside the new Carrabba's Italian Grill on William Hilton Parkway, between Palmetto Dunes Plantation and Port Royal Plantation, and you will pass flower-named streets that could belong to any middle-class town in America. This is Folly Field, another of Hilton Head's oldest neighborhoods. The first sign of renovation is in the lack of pavement on those first few streets you pass on the left-hand side; in preparation for new, smoother roadways, these streets are temporarily dirt roads. A few seconds more, and you pass the soon-to-be elite neighborhood of Sandcastles by the Sea, located on a massive spread of land formerly used as a driving range. Villa complexes and more single-family houses line Folly Field Road all the way to the beach, where you begin to see larger homes typical of Hilton Head's luxury reputation. Formerly one of the island's oldest residential areas, Folly Field is undergoing vast remodeling and updating to become a major attraction as one of Hilton Head's premier vacation destinations for residents, beach-seeking families, and high-end vacationers.

Folly Field is partially responsible for the explosion of Hilton Head Island as not only a vacation town, but a place to live. Olin McIntosh of the Hilton Head Company built the island's first beach cottages at Folly Field beach in 1953 to generate more ferry traffic from the mainland in hopes that the South Carolina government would then build a bridge to accommodate all the new residents and visitors. When the state still refused, the 1956 Hilton Head Toll Bridge Authority was organized and privately financed by businesses. The bridge worked beautifully, and tolls were removed within three years after their overwhelming success covered the HHTBA's debt.

Folly Field This mid-island area, bordered on its west side by Highway 278 and on its east by the Atlantic Ocean, is a diverse landscape of seaside homes and condos, anchored at its hub by Adventure Cove. Homes range from cozy beach shacks to huge mansions, and villas run the gamut from budget one-bedroom condos to exclusive oceanfront flats. Several of the condo complexes and small neighborhoods offer gated security, but like Forest Beach, the larger portion of Folly Filed is open-access. 24 Hour Line to Serve You - 800-717-9876 |
