The Windmill Harbour entrance has been a burden to many residents over the years but it looks like they may see some relief. A S.C. Department of Transportation official said Thursday that a $900,000 project is in place to fix the turn lanes near Windmill Harbour. The DOT project will alter lanes outside of Windmill Harbour, where drivers entering and leaving U.S. 278 often make quick and dangerous turns into the community. This project should dramatically improve the safety at this dangerous intersection.
Construction crews plan to lengthen the acceleration lane for right turns out of the community and will push the left-turn lane into Windmill Harbour closer to the median. Work should start this month or early next month. Crews plan to work at night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and plan to close only one lane at a time. The project is expected to be completed by August 31, 2015.
